Great Video!
Great to see a pro at work 👍
Man of many talents and interests!
Sorry pal, but I long for an update on old rusty... not that interested in race cars... will it come or should I forget it?
Soon, I am retired and will have all the time in the world to work on all the projects. Right now , have a full time job... so yes it is coming...
thanks a lot for your amazing videos. may you please explain a bit more what to check when inspecting the toe links to make sure they are still good to go? thanks!
I like the way you teach
re the gear change. The return spring in the gear box is designed to centre a motor cycle 100gram 15cm gear leaver. In your car you will have a two long cables and a remote gear leaver to deal with. The remote leaver will need 2 centring springs. When working correctly, you pull back on an up change and let go, then pull again for the next up change. Lubricate the internals of the cables with ATF or light oil. Snip the corner out of a plastic bag, insert cable end, tape up so no leaks, fill bag with 200ml ATF and hang bag and cable somewhere it can drip overnight. Cables should offer little or no resistance when pushed or pulled. Replace cables if you cant achieve by oiling. When you get it right you will be able to do clutchless up and down changes with appropriate slight blip of the throttle. The clutch I would first try just replacing the frictions and steels with fresh OEM or std aftermarket plates and heavy duty springs. This won't cost much at all. Bikes fry clutches all the time and there are heaps of after market options.
Thanks James. My car has no cables but solid rods and bars for shifting... But I will look into it....meanwhile I got a 20% stronger clutch and springs..
Interesting as always, thank you. Do you find people are a bit daft as spectators around the track and paddock? As in not looking out for cars. Whenever I have been at a track I am always super aware of cars moving around and staying out of the way but see so many people apparently oblivious!
Yes, some people just wonder around and have no idea how dangerous it can be . That is why I prefer a closed pit/ paddock
Wow great work Steve .Thanks yet again Love your videos! Please keep them coming. I really look forward to your postings ! best regards
7k rpm, not a problem, when you ride at lower rpm. Swap sprockets. You should be able to get 30% lower rpm with sprockets for 20mph lower top speed. Passenger pegs, I don't have a passenger. Many motorcycles have this 1st gear quirk. Just keep your foot on 1st gear downshift, while you release the throttle.
high quality content as usually I don't think it's a weight problem because the engine delivers the same torque regardless of the weight unless it loses traction, of course with the bike max torque can be applied for shorter periods of time because of necessary throttle modulation and faster shift intervals. if the shifter operates like you described I wonder how would bikers use it? is it the gravity of the shift lever helping the mechanism settle down? you could add a small spring for that I guess
Thanks for the comments, you are right as the torque of the engine itself has not changed. However the mass to propel is bigger ( race car versus bike weight), hence the clutsch plates are more loaded ... I have already found new clutch plates and stronger clutch springs with 15-20% increase in clutch coupling capacity.. So that should do the job..
Thanks for sharing 👍🏼 Wouldn’t the toe have changed after adjusting for weight balance ?
Thanks for the comments, no the toe nor camber will change , as long as the riding height is not changed . That is why after a cross weight balance adjustment one must re-adjust the riding height or verify it that its the same as before.
Ok thanks 👍🏼
Absolute life saver! I couldn't for the life of me remember what I used and this cleared it up, and saved me flushing the entire system. Cheers.
How do you decide the toe angles given the next track, do you have some kind of history log to decide?
I have loved your videos for years. Also something you might be interested in was that I welded a nut on the end of where my trailer winch handle goes and a cordless drill on the high torque setting does it easily. All the best for your retirement!
Great tip!

Steve still waiting for Dusty aka Rusty.
standard springs for more clearance on country roads.
Really useful. Many thanks. I'm about to replace the rotors and calipers and I think there is an issue with the tie rod end. Your video helped me understand the set up.
Great video and nice to see your analysis and development of the car. It would be interesting to look at the fracture surface on that joint. Looks like some fatigue cracking was there. Definitely worth checking the other joints on the car to see if they have started to crack too. Also, if you drove far with the joint broken, did it put extra stress on the other joints on that wishbone and links?
Thanks for the comments, I decided to replace all the suspension rose joints, beter be safe then sorry
Always interesting and entertaining. Thanks Steve 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
every video is better and better
Great video Steve 😊🏴
Thank you
Great video thank you
Thanks
Rose joints with grease nipples are only fit for agricultural equipment
Thank you John, That is what I was told as well in the paddock . TXS
Great video thank you
Thank you
So will you be replacing all of the rose joints on the car?
I will David, that is the best approach. Its about 24 pieces
@@D3Sshooter Expensive, but your life is worth more 😀
That is strange ----- the Heim Joint snapped in two ----- I'm like --pdxRetired below ---- I think I would change out -- ALL -- of those joints ----- it shouldn't have snapped that easy ----- that's what you use on hot rods ---- split the Wishbones and attach Rod end joints at the ends and bolt to the frame one on each frame rail ---- Boy ---- that would be scary if one of those broke ---- that's all that keeps the front axle in place ----- So yeah ---- change them all ----- get good quality ----------- Sounds like --- a Heavy Duty pressure plate --- heavy duty disc ---- resurface flywheel? may be needed ------ Your Racers look like a lot of fun ---- I really enjoy watching F1 Races ----- So Fast --- little time for a correction ------ Well --- You'll get her figured out and be back on the track soon ----- Hope you have a Good week ----- And have a Good Father's Day ------- Rodney
Thanks Rodney, yes indeed all will be changed and the clutch replaced with a new set of heavy duty race plates
F1000 (?) should be much faster than FF. More HP and wings with the same weight.
Yes , it should however there a few things that make it not as good, especially in this case: Slipping clutch under fast acceleration, at high gears and at high RPM's -> Typical problem with a clutch that can't handle the torque. Second issue is the closer ratio of the gears, as it has 6 gears it requires more shifting, and shiftig takes time. The good thing is, that its sequential so that saves a bit of time. I am sure that if the issues are fixed , it will be faster...
it's apparent from all you videos that you're super knowledgeable about things concerning your hobby and I think it's great that you're willing to share that knowledge in an easily approachable but still informational way
Thank you Ryann, sharing amongst friends and alike is how we all learn and improve.. I have learned so much from comments
That was still good fun, it was a testing day after all and you did test it and found 2 issues . Now you have more fun fixing them 😁. Nice video thanks for updating us.
Thanks Robert, indeed
The man who buys everytool he needs doesn't have an electrical winch? Come one... compared to the rest they are not that expansive! 😊
I need to do some power training every so often 😀😀
Can you use an impact wrench on your winch?
Yes, that could work... thanks.... good tip
Started watching your channel for “Old Rusty” stayed for your other videos
Same here 😀
Thank you , and in a few months I will be retired and have more time to continiue on Old Rusty
I would change out all the suspension joints that are the same type as the one that broke. They may have been stressed at some time in their past.
Thank you , and indeed as I found out from the comments , these that are fitted are as it seems not for racing. They have been on it and looked good so , I kept them. Now we will change them
Glad you are safe. Did you just get a bad part or was it a part not good for racing? (trying to learn). Would be nice to know what you end up using.
As it seems and based on good advice, those are not intended for racing.... but agricultural usage. They have been on the car and looked ok . I will get racing rosejoints...
My neighbour has a trailer of almost the same design . The tilt pump is something he needs 😅
Yep that is handy.... this one came with the roof/top part . That is what I made
actually looking forward to seeing how you diagnose and fix the issues!
9:34 You have very high IQ score😝
I wondered if the clutch would slip when you adjusted it.
I did adjust it later again, to the point where it starts to grip when fully depressed... the car moves forward as soon as i release a few mm . So that is not the issue IMO... the issue is the torque of the engine when fast acceleration at high RPM's . That Power comes lose 160 Hp to push that 400Kg car forward. That mass is to big for the clutch and it starts to slip.. I will need a new heavy duty clutch to solve that...
👍👍👍👍👍
What a shame about the issues. But hey, that's what a test day is for.
Indeed, that is all part of the fun..
Steve...do you have a hard time sleeping the night before a race or important session? i do....
No , I don't... I sleep as a rose....there is nothing you can do about it anyhow
I have a 3hr endurance race tonight. I dreamt all night last night that I left my suit and helmet at home. When I lined up for the race, I was driving a washing machine. 😂 Hope the race tonight goes better.
@@54mgtf22 haha so funny ,and yes dreams canbe strange
Steve - Great that your friend spotted the broken rose joint before anything happened on the track. Looking forward to seeing the Konig running at full speed.
You and me both!
Lucky escape with that joint. Your previous video on preparation didn't mention a stripdown that I can see. Carroll Smith in his excellent book "Prepare to Win" recommends a full stripdown of any used racing car. You may not know the history of how it has been driven, and this is your chance to assess any wear or damaged parts. Stay safe friend.
Nice to see it on the track.
Thanks
what model is the vacum blast?
love watching your work Steve. In what video are you sandblasting? I need to see your rig, i started blasting my 67 and found glass beads worked well.
Thanks Michael, I use a IBIX a air dryer and a large compressor... here is a video where I use mine for blasting beams and explain what I use ua-cam.com/video/Fi1YduucpBE/v-deo.htmlsi=I3wvhUcMF5kxEega
It’s when points open that spark occurs. Not when they close.
Great video, Steve - very informative. Picking up on your first point, swapping to good quality R9 flexible fuel pipes is essential. I've been using Raceflux and Codan, but there are numerous reports of R9 pipe branded as Advanced Fluid Solutions, which hardens and cracks pretty soon after installation. So always worth sourcing from a reputable supplier.
Awesome! Personaly i think a car in this used and beaten up condition certanly belong on the tracks, it feel to me as it want to go back and finish the race! I fully undersand if it had been differnt if it was something ver unique or in almost brand new factory condition, but not for a well used car like this, this is a race car in my personal opinion.
